A Multisectoral Approach to Internal Displacement

The multisectoral approach focuses on the overall well-being of displaced persons during the period of displacement with the aim of preparing and equipping them for reintegration into society with dignity. This includes meeting their mental and physical health, education and social needs. Implementation requires taking a holistic approach, bringing together humanitarian, psychosocial, health, education and social workers. The multisectoral approach aligns short-term needs to long-term reintegration objectives.

This document is in response to the multifaceted needs of people that have been forced to leave their homes as a result of armed conflict, situations of violence or natural disaster.  It aims to:

  • Highlight the importance of overall well-being to the recovery process;
  • Advocate for a multisectoral, collaborative and holistic approach to the rehabilitation of displaced persons;
  • Drive a policy based response to the issues of internal displacement; and 
  • Support the integration of the health, education, and social needs of displaced persons into broader socio-economic reforms.
