Africa is home to nearly one-third of the world’s forcibly displaced population.
Countries across Africa are dealing with the effects of persistent armed conflict and climate-related disasters, including floods and droughts, which have exacerbated existing vulnerabilities, including food insecurity, water scarcity, tensions over land resources and natural resource conflicts. The interaction of these issues continues to drive up the number of people forced to flee their homes.
In some cases, people fleeing to neighbouring countries to seek safety from conflict are displaced again—by another armed conflict. In other circumstances, floods, drought, and extreme heat exacerbate hunger, poverty, and diseases, leaving people no choice but to flee.
As persistent and cyclical conflicts have become the norm, with heightening climate shocks, underfunded humanitarian operations, declining funding sources, and increasing geopolitical tensions, humanitarian and development partners must work together to develop and implement sustainable solutions and pathways for displaced people to reduce their vulnerabilities and rebuild their lives with dignity.
To drive economic growth and prosperity for the people, we must address the underlying issues affecting the safety, security of lives and property, stability and development of people and their nations.
